Polycarbonate CNC Machining

Excelite provides CNC machining for custom polycarbonate parts made to customer drawings and specifications. From flat panels to housings, covers and components with holes, slots or routed profiles, our team helps turn PC sheet into parts ready for inspection, assembly or further fabrication.

What Is Polycarbonate CNC Machining?

Polycarbonate CNC  Machining is a precision manufacturing process used to produce high-accuracy parts from engineering-grade polycarbonate.

Using CNC milling and CNC routing, CNC turning polycarbonate components are machined to tight tolerances with excellent dimensional stability and surface finish.

This process supports complex geometries and custom designs, making it ideal for applications requiring strength, durability, and reliable performance.

Why Polycarbonate Is Used for CNC Machined Parts

Superior Material Properties

  • High Impact Resistance – Provides exceptional durability for machined parts used in demanding and high-stress applications.
  • High Heat Deflection Temperature – Maintains dimensional stability and performance under elevated temperatures during use.
  • Low Moisture Absorption – Ensures consistent mechanical properties in varying environmental conditions.
  • Scratch Resistance-Enhances hard surface coating for the products and extends the service life of machined components.
  • Lightweight Strength

Advantages in Manufacturing

  • Optimized Cutting Efficiency
  • Tight Tolerances & Dimensional Stability
  • Short Lead Times
  • Ideal for Small-Batch Production
  • Rapid Prototyping Capability

CNC Machined Polycarbonate Types

Solid Polycarbonate

Solid polycarbonate is used for CNC-machined panels, guards, covers and enclosures that require impact resistance and a rigid structure. CNC routing, milling and drilling can create custom profiles, openings and mounting features.

Optical-grade polycarbonate

Optical-Grade Polycarbonate is selected for components where light transmission and visual quality are important, including viewing windows, lenses and transparent covers. Machining alone does not guarantee optical clarity, so specify surface finishes and viewing areas in the drawings.

Flame-Retardant Polycarbonate

Flame-Retardant Polycarbonate is used for components that must meet specified fire-performance requirements. The suitable grade and rating depend on the application and part thickness. Include relevant specifications when requesting CNC-machined panels, housings or covers.

Hard-coated polycarbonate

Hard-Coated Polycarbonate has a surface coating designed to improve scratch resistance compared with uncoated PC. It is used for protective windows, covers and panels where surface durability matters. Specify coated surfaces and finish requirements so they can be considered during machining.

CNC Processes for Polycarbonate Parts

CNC milling for a high precision operations to achieve tight tolerance.

CNC milling removes material with rotating cutting tools to create pockets, slots, steps and contoured surfaces in polycarbonate parts. It suits components with detailed features or three-dimensional shapes that require controlled dimensions.

CNC routing for shaping versatile materials

CNC routing cuts polycarbonate sheets into custom profiles, panels and openings. It is well suited to flat parts such as machine guards, covers and equipment panels with routed edges, holes or cutouts.

CNC turning for cylindrical components

CNC turning rotates polycarbonate stock against a cutting tool to produce cylindrical components. Typical features include outside diameters, bores, grooves and stepped profiles.

Cost-Saving Design Tips

1. Choose suitable stock sizes

Select standard sheet thicknesses or stock dimensions close to the finished part size. This can reduce excess material and machining time.

2. Consider subassemblies

For large parts, compare machining from one piece with making smaller components that are joined later. Subassemblies may reduce material waste, but include joining and assembly costs in the comparison.

3. Simplify features

Remove details that do not affect fit or function. Use consistent hole sizes and practical internal radii where possible, and avoid deep, narrow pockets that require more complex machining.

4. Specify only necessary tolerances and finishes

Apply tight tolerances only to critical dimensions. Identify surfaces that need polishing or optical clarity instead of requiring special finishing across the whole part.

Frequent Asked Questions

Excelite offers CNC machining services without minimum quantity requirements, catering to prototypes and short to medium-run production needs. Our precision machining capabilities enable us to deliver high-quality products with flexibility and efficiency, ensuring that your specific requirements are met, whether for prototyping or production purposes.

For the 3D drawing, we would prefer STEP, IGES, or X_T format. For the 2D drawing, we would prefer PDF format there are tolerances with the dimensions if possible.

General Machining Tolerances on plastics and composites will be +/- 0.010”(+/- 0.254 mm).

Lead times are 2 to 3 weeks for prototypes and 4 weeks for production runs.
Some special urgent orders can be discussed beforehand.

polycarbonate is the strongest plastic for CNC. But it is easy to machine with a CNC.

Polyethylene (PE) is the cheapest plastic for CNC machining. Known for its affordability and excellent machining properties, PE is used widely in a variety of applications, including wear strips, gears, and consumer goods.

Absolutely. Excelite uses advanced CNC machining, which allows for high precision and complex designs. Our experienced team can turn your design into a finely crafted finished product.

  • Maintain uniform wall thickness where possible to avoid warping or internal stress.
  • Include adequate radii on corners rather than sharp internal corners to reduce stress concentrations.
  • Consider draft angles for molded/formed features if applicable, but for machined parts ensure tool access and appropriate clearance.
  • Account for thermal expansion, as the material will expand under machining temperatures.

PC is tougher and more impact resistant; less likely to chip.

PC can tolerate more aggressive toolpath/feeds because of higher thermal resistance.

Acrylic often has slightly better optical clarity in some grades, but is more brittle and more prone to chipping or cracking when machined.
