Abrasion Resistant Polycarbonate Sheet

Excelite’s abrasion resistant (AR) polycarbonate sheet, as know as Lexan Margard10, also call hard coated polycarbonate sheet, or scratch resistant polycarbonate plastic. It’s a durable sheet which offers protection of anti-scratches, smudges, chemical exposure, and even graffiti. This scratch-resistant polycarbonate sheet is engineered to withstand extreme conditions in high-traffic areas; including bus shelters, kiosks, and public screens. Depending on your application, our AR sheets are available as single-sided (AR1), and double-sided hard coated polycarbonate (AR2).
Our scratch and abrasion-resistant polycarbonate sheets offer several other features, like anti-fingerprint, easy to clean. The surface hardness of polycarbonate sheeting from HB to 2H (pencil hardness test), offering high-level protection against scratches and chemical, graffiti. Our hard coating process can also be applied to acrylic sheets, increasing surface hardness from 2H to 5H.
The primary advantage of Excelite abrasion-resistant polycarbonate sheets is their exceptional weathering durability and superior scratch resistance compared to other options. Unlike others, Excelite’s abrasion resistant sheets can withstand bending and forming processes without compromising the hard coating, preventing delamination or flaking. This unique feature allows us to create curved shapes with abrasion resistance, ensuring long-lasting performance and visual clarity in various applications.

    FAQ

    Most frequent questions and answers

Indeed, while polycarbonate is a robust material, its surface is softer compared to glass, making it susceptible to scratches over time. To address this concern, manufacturers often apply a hard coating to the surface of the polycarbonate sheet. This hard coating serves as a protective layer, enhancing scratch resistance and prolonging the lifespan of the material. It is a common practice to provide this additional layer to ensure that polycarbonate maintains its optical clarity and durability, especially in applications where the sheet is exposed to potential abrasion or wear.

Polycarbonate is a durable material, but its surface is softer than glass. The exact hardness can vary depending on the specific formulation and manufacturing process, but generally, polycarbonate has a Rockwell hardness of approximately 72-75 R scale. This is softer than glass, which typically has a higher hardness.

While polycarbonate is resistant to many types of impacts and is known for its toughness, it is more susceptible to scratching than some other materials. The application of hard coatings can significantly improve scratch resistance and protect the surface from abrasion.

AR Polycarbonate typically refers to polycarbonate sheets that have Abrasion Resistant coating on polycarbonate sheet surface.

Here are the tips to make polycarbonate abrasion and scratch resistant.

Hard Coating: Applying a hard coating to the surface of polycarbonate is a widely used method. This coating forms a protective layer that increases the material’s resistance to scratches. The hard coating is often cured through a chemical process or exposure to UV light.

Anti-Scratch Coating: Anti-scratch coatings are designed specifically to reduce the susceptibility of polycarbonate to scratches. These coatings create a durable barrier that helps protect the surface from abrasion.

Abrasion-Resistant Polycarbonate: Some manufacturers produce polycarbonate sheets that are inherently more resistant to abrasion. These sheets are formulated with additives that enhance their resistance to wear and scratches.

The abrasion-resistant acrylic/polycarbonate sheets can be cleaned in the same way as standard acrylic or polycarbonate sheets. Simply use a mild soap or a soft cloth or sponge to gently clean the surface. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or rough materials that may scratch or damage the abrasion-resistant coating. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth to maintain the clarity and performance of the sheet.
